Respiratory Tract Infections

Respiratory Tract Infections (RTIs) are infections that affect the airways and lungs. They can involve the upper respiratory tract, including the nose, throat, and sinuses, or the lower respiratory tract, including the windpipe, bronchi, and lungs.

Common Types

  • Common Cold: Usually caused by viruses and may cause a runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and mild cough.
  • Sinusitis: Infection or inflammation of the sinuses, often causing facial pressure, nasal congestion, and headache.
  • Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the throat that can lead to soreness and difficulty swallowing.
  • Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes, commonly associated with persistent coughing and mucus production.
  • Pneumonia: An infection of the lungs that can cause cough, fever, chest discomfort, and difficulty breathing.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of infection but may include:

  • Cough
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sore throat
  • Fever or chills
  • Sneezing
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Chest discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Mucus or phlegm

Causes and Risk Factors

RTIs may be caused by viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms. They can spread through respiratory droplets, close contact, contaminated hands, or frequently touched surfaces. Young children, older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and individuals with certain chronic conditions may be more vulnerable to severe infections.

Prevention

Good hygiene can help reduce the risk of respiratory infections. Regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding close contact with people who are unwell, maintaining good ventilation, and staying up to date with recommended vaccinations can all help protect respiratory health.

When to Seek Medical Care

Most mild respiratory infections improve with rest and supportive care. However, medical attention is important if symptoms become severe or persistent, particularly if there is difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, or a high or prolonged fever.

Early evaluation can help identify serious infections and ensure appropriate treatment when needed.
