Post-COVID complications, also known as Post-COVID Conditions or Long COVID, refer to new, returning, or persistent health problems that can occur after the initial COVID-19 infection. Symptoms may continue for weeks or months and can affect multiple parts of the body. Some people may experience these problems even after a relatively mild initial infection. [CDC]
Some people may experience ongoing respiratory problems after COVID-19, particularly following severe infection or pneumonia. These may include persistent breathlessness, cough, reduced exercise tolerance, and abnormal lung function. In some patients, lung abnormalities or scarring may persist after severe COVID-19 illness.
Evaluation depends on the symptoms and the individual's medical history. A healthcare professional may perform a physical examination and recommend investigations such as chest imaging, lung function tests, oxygen assessment, blood tests, or cardiac evaluation when appropriate. The aim is also to identify other conditions that may be causing similar symptoms.
There is no single treatment for all post-COVID complications. Management is individualized according to the symptoms and underlying problems. Depending on the patient's condition, care may include respiratory rehabilitation, breathing exercises, appropriate physical activity, treatment of specific medical conditions, and regular follow-up with a healthcare professional.
Recovery varies from person to person. Symptoms may gradually improve, while some may fluctuate or return after periods of improvement. Regular follow-up can help monitor respiratory function, exercise tolerance, and other ongoing symptoms, particularly after severe COVID-19 infection or hospitalization.
Consult a healthcare professional if you have persistent breathlessness, ongoing cough, chest discomfort, unexplained fatigue, reduced exercise capacity, or symptoms that interfere with your daily activities. Severe or sudden difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, or other rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent medical assessment.
